Fallingwater (Poem)

No Blanket But Stars

by George Ella Lyon

He was born
where things meet
at the red rock
the right place
in swift pain
my sister with me
and a mother
of our mother’s line
to cut the cord

He is welcome
who walked
with the Spirit
and grew
in darkness
and danced
to my heart’s drum

He is cradled
in a basket
and no wish
no hope   no fear
widens our eyes
All is complete

I know the wheel
turns   Tomorrow
we must leave
the red rock
return to our people
This first one
will outgrow
the basket   my milk
He will walk away
to meet blood-words
But for now
I almost see
the hoop
that holds us
like the basket
It shines
at all the edges
of the world
